Kerdi over mortar bed?

I have an irregular shower and was wondering if anyone has ever floated a mortar bed, then used kerdi over it for water proofing? If so, Did you integrate the kerdi drain. I would like to float the bed an use the kerdi, but would like to hear from someone who has done it.

Hi Larry, It's done all the time. Check out the link in my signature, my shower thread has a few pics of the mud pan and Kerdi Drain. It's pretty easy to do.

Hi Larry,

Trust me, the sale will not set me free, but I think you need The Kerdi Shower Book.

Wink

Actually I bought the kerdi book about a year ago when I did the last shower.
Great book! This particular shower I will not be using a presloped pan, but will be doing a mud bed myself. I just found the book last nite and started going thru it. I planned on using a kerdi drain, but my plumber already installed a standard drain. (this is new construction.) The drain is circular and it looks like the hgt can be adjusted by turning it in and out of the threads. Should I take out this drain and use the kerdi drain instead? I did not see anything in the kerdi book about using kerdi with a standard type of drain. Also seems like it would be more work cutting the tiles for a circular drain

Hi Larry,

There is a method where you can use a standard drain with Kerdi but I would recommend against it. Use the Kerdi Drain, it's pretty easy to cut the old drain off and install the Kerdi one in its place. Look in the Liberry for a picture showing typical dimensions/heights for the riser pipe. the square drain is a breeze to tile around too, especially if you go with 2x2 tiles.
