"Better Bench" shower bench installation

Hey,

I have a typical "1994 production builder" shower...i.e. 4.5" White Porcelan tiles over some type of moisture resistant drywall.

My wife wants a very small shower bench installed (so she can put her foot on whilst shaving). Better Bench (www.innoviscorp.com) looks like a great solution.

Manufacturer instructions have you remove some wall tiles, screw the bench into the sub-wall, and re-thinset and install tiles.

My problem: I pulled off one of the "leg" tiles on the wall of the shower and found the sub-wall to be full of mousture and to me, felt like it could crumble if I jostle it too much.

Is the wet rated drywall strong enough for me to remove a couple of tiles, or am I better off drilling holes though some tiles, installing the bench and tiling over the bench?

I plan drill through the tiles...Is this a bad move?

Thanks,

Ted

Hi Ted, Welcome.

I'm sorry, but you have a "sheetrock shower." I think your little project has just grown. I don't try to repair them. I rip them out and re-build them using better materials.

Sorry to say, By the sounds of things if you don't tear it all out now and start again using the right materials, It could cost you a fortune later on.
