Shower Window niche framing n waterproofing

Greetings!
Need advice on how to fur out the window frame and use Redguard.

My little old shack in the mountains had a frozen pipe; "contractor" was released from service and now I am a dyi-er.

I need to extend the wall to install cement board, the bathtub flange is 1 to 1.5 in away from the window wood frame.

1. Should I remove the green board and fur out studs?
2. Best way to "frame" window gap? If removing green board, there will be a 1 to 1.5in gap between the wood and cement board. If leaving the green board, will still have a gap.

3. Thought to use the fibratape n thin set to cover the wood + cement board sandwich to create a solid type surface for the Redguard; however Versabond says it isn't for wood. Other thoughts on how to waterproof that area using Reguard?

4. Shower head wall: The released contractor said he used waterproof caulking on tape. I get to remove that cement board (completely out of wack). Can I re-use the board after breaking off the tape?

I am new here unless you count the 20+ hrs I've read this forum!!

1. Yes. Also greenboard isn't a suitable substrate for tile in a wet area to begin with.

2. Not following what you're asking. What window gap are you referring to?

3. For windows this is how I typically approach them. Obviously if you plan to use liquid it will be a little different.
4. You could try but it would probably be best just to grab a couple new pieces.

Ryan,

Do you have a photo of a window seal done that way, please? How much does the kerdi-band fold up onto the window frame? I was going to fill the gap with kerdi-fix and run the band up to the window perpendicularly but I'm basing that on their tub base waterproofing video.

I don't, the kband only goes up the frame the thickness of the tile basically. I let it go up a little higher then trim it once the tile is installed

1. I asked the question incorrectly; Redguard tech support said I could fur out OVER the greenboard without removing it so that I could install the cement board. If I did that I was confused about the entire frame around window.

2.After removing green board. Sandwich picture example is Window, window lip, frame, fur piece, cement board. Not sure how tight I can get all of these to each other for the entire 4 sides of the window (gaps!) For the sill I have less than an inch to install tile, etc.

Can I use silicon for seems and Reguard after?

Haven't surrendered to Kerdi stuff yet...

Many thanks for the Help!! Pamela

Do you mean width of the sill or thickness? I am looking at that first picture and it doesn't look like you have less than an inch in either.

With cement board? alkali-resistant tape and thinset then cover everything with redgard.

Ok, having adjusted the image I see what's happening. You mean thickness. That wood might be trim. If you were to remove the drywall, you would see the framing which would leave you more room.

Wait for pros to chime in before you start ripping stuff apart on my account.
