Again, Billy, what specifically are you looking at in the Handbook?

FWIW, the PAN must be waterproofed...that will either be done with a liner, or with a topically applied waterproofing...plumbing code requires that waterproofing to go at least 2" above the top of the curb. But, the rest of the shower often is just water resistant (i.e., not damaged if it gets wet) unless you use one of the approved methods with a surface applied membrane. Personally, I like the idea of a waterproof shower, and that requires a membrane, either a sheet (my preference) or a liquid applied one done according to the specific products instructions with quality workmanship. Tile is not considered waterproofing...it's a decorative, wear layer.

I dont have the handbook in front of me but there is a notation for optional membranes on walls and whether a primary membrane was used behind the board .

I've always thought that was confusing. It says "optional membrane". Some think that means the membrane is optional. I think it's talking about which membrane option: One in front of cbu or one behind.

The intention is one or the other, not both.
