Shower drain inset into the front of the shower bench

I have been playing around with another shower drain concept.

What do you guy's think? Is it another Katwyk Tile DIY ghetto idea?

Very cool! Could angle the sides back too as another option.

The only issue I see with it is that it doesn't lend itself to large format tile which is kind of the reason these experiments came about.

Although you could put a grout joint down the middle, centered off the drain, and pitch both sides in while sloping the whole thing toward the bench...

I like the idea but cleaning may be a tad difficult.

What about putting it into the face of the bench? Vertically?

Paul, I started this design and was thinking of doing a panel connected by magnets that covered the nitch and leave approx. 1" gap on the bottom for the water to drain through. The cover can be taken off real easy. The drain I will use is the ebbe square drain. Lately when I put them up against a bench or a wall I have been sanding off the threads so the whole drain riser slides up and down kind of like a schluter drain. I'm not sure if I would even put a drain cover on the top. It would be open to get hair and scum out a whole lot easier than any linear drain system I've ever used and I've used alot. Let's keep the money that gets spent on these custom drains in the tile guy's pockets. The time we spend ordering and waiting for linear drains plus all the work coordinating the install with the contractor and plumber is time I seem to not get paid for. I know you do the entire job in house so you don't feel my pain.

Large format tile I think will still work with this drain. The floor will slope one way and that is towards the bench. The right and left side come out 6" further than the center of the bench. I'm sure there is adequate slope against the face of the bench to get all the water going down the drain. I will test this out this weekend.

wish I had time to invent stuff . Then again if I stopped reading this forum I might. Seems to me like the little box out for the drain should be square rather than triangular to allow for cleaning. You'd need a q-tip to get into that back corner.

Made a few changes on the bench drain design after reading comments about cleaning.
This time I drilled a 4-1/2" hole in the foam and that gave me a round back for the drain nitch. The radius is large enough that the round drain cover still can be removed after the nitch get's tiled.
I am working on the cover for the front of the bench that is held on by magnets.
This is a crude example but it work's great.

Last picture big ? Will this floor drain good with 1/4" per ft. slope going only in one direction towards the bench. I'm thinking the right and left sides will be higher than the drain face and the water will move to the drain. I hope the picture show's what I'm trying to explain.

I like the roundedness, very cool! And I think you're right the the curve in the bench will funnel the water into the drain.

Here's an idea for a door: make it into a little garage-type door that raises up when turning the water on. Then the door can close when their done...
