Layout question

Okay, I messed a layout up and I need some advice on what to do about it. 3x6 tile so not a lot of up and down to move, hit my tub edge right,

floor right, up against plug couldn't go higher,

couldn't go low enough because demo left marks on walls that needed to be covered by install. Now I have a wedge cut left against the ceiling.


What can I do to finish this, and what should I do different next time?

o.k..... you wanted fulls and halves along left tub edge and looks like you gonna have small cut's,not much you can do kinda married to it ...unless you do a soldier course like you did in other piks.......

Everything else worked out great other than the cuts against the ceiling, and the ceiling is unlevel. I said the cuts were from 3/4 to 1/4 but I don't think that I can even get a piece into the back corner, so the top row could disappear into nothing. I guess that is my only option. Just makes the tile job look bad when things don't line up, square up, with existing boundaries. Would have liked more than 1/2 tile so wedge cuts don't show.

Nelson, avoiding this would have taken proper planning. Measuring how you were doing to do you layout so you didn't end up at the ceiling like you did. In doing layouts with people I tell them, I want to know how everything is going to look before I actually do the installation. Small pieces that aren't even the same are going to take the good from your job. Everyone is going to be saying, "wtf happened up there at the ceiling?"

Depends on how much you are willing to do to get it right. You could drop the ceiling and make sure it is level. Take away that gap. You could go over the existing drywall with new drywall, shim it in the process and make it level, you wouldn't have to remove the existing piece.

I would say use some kind of wood trim up there, but it won't look right if the ceiling isn't level. Maybe you could shim it to make it look level and use some caulk to filled in area. Dunno, just an option if you don't want to drop the ceiling or pull tile off the wall.

This job is an example of no planning ahead. You never want to start tiling and just see what is there when you get there. I little adjusting at the first row could have prevented this. You don't have to have a full piece there though it looks good when you do.

If it bothers you too much, tile the ceiling just over the tub area.

I know this did not turn out right and it is my fault, but it is not entirely because of no planning ahead. I guess one of my questions is can you get every layout to come out some hows? I had the floor, tub edge, countertop, plugin, a bullnose on top of the walls beside the tub, window bottom, window top, mirror and the ceiling to hit on the horizontal lines. And like I side the tiles are only 3" tall, so not a lot of moving the layout up or down. Everything else did come out right, but I did not check the ceiling for level and that is what got me into trouble. Anyways this is what I ended up with and I am as disappointed, or more, than anyone else. Looking back I should have caught this, but then again looking back I don't know what I could have done differently.

If the ceiling is out of level, you can bed it out with more mud. It will take several layers but I have done it before.

I would install crown molding, to hide that gap.

i would put 1/2" hardi on the ceiling, tile it , and continue that radius mud cap along the front....

I like this idea the best, I'll run it past the HO and see if it flies, hafta order more radius cap tile, sigh!!!, stretch this job out longer, Ohh well!!!!

Just chalk this one up as experience. Learn from your mistakes and move on. You'll never make that mistake again and will do better next time. There are certainly many folks on this forum who have a few disappointments in their work. I'll be first to admit to have a closet full of them.

Tiling the ceiling was the way to go!

Looks like all they're doing is drinking coffee in there.
