The trouble with Strata Mat is it has lots of holes in it. Not great at waterproofing (they never claimed it was) Try the UM from Mapei. You will like it.

Also a fan of 253 Gold when I can get it, and I get Stratamat online. If you're not waterproofing, there's not much reason to go with something more expensive.
And, Stratamat offers crack isolation where others don't.

Doing a test with kerdi board, kerdi membrane, and kerdi band.
Adhering a strip of kerdi band and membrane to a piece of kerdi board. I used non modified customs customblend and versabond. The customblend is white and the versa is grey.
Both mixed to a consistency where they would barely hold a notch.
As if application the versabond was much easier to use. It seems to have a a creamier consistency and feels like the it allows the kerdi band to lay tighter to the substrate without removing too much thinset.
After 24 hours they both seem to be holding the materials together at the same resistence. This isn't saying much. Neither are holding the kerdi to kerdi at all. Its hard top belive that this would be enough to pass a water test.
Going to give them 5 days before pulling apart

Travis.....If history and experience are any judge, the Customblend is only good for "Yard Bunnies" and putting under Durock.
Versabond may void Schluter's warranty, but sticks well and that's all I care about.
Laticrete and Mapai make some excellent unmodified morters that certainly "play well" with Kerdi.
You pays your money and you takes your chances......

The customblend passed the water test.
Homeowner thinking that they are funny.

After 2 weeks of drying I decided to start separating the kerdi band and kerdi membrane from the kerdi panel. Both thinsets held on to the kerdi extremely well. Both pulled the fleece from the membrane.
I would pick the versabond if i had to say that one was better. But this was not an extremely scientific test and the resistance measuring device was my arm. Although i would not hesitate in using customblend again as a kerdi install thinset. It does have at least one other use rather than building lawn bunnies. I did notice that the customblend had larger sand particles. I found my trowel rolling on top of the grains of sand. I do prefer a creamier thinset.
For what its worth.

Holden,
I’m using the mapei uncoupling membrane mortar. If used to apply Kerdi to a wall board, like goboard, how long before it dries? I did a test and the next day it was still lightly damp.
