140 year old bathroom floor

We bought our old farmhouse 3 years ago and now want to tackle the bathroom floor by ripping out the linoleum. The floor dips at the doorway and has a few uneven areas. Can we tile over the existing subfloor laying small tile ..(...the same tile used in uneven shower floors)...or do we still have to level out the floor regardless of tile size?
