The Kerdi Shower Book

I'm replacing the old thread I had here because newcomers were reading only the first page or so and emailing me for the beta version. The download has been available in the Tile Your World Store for a little over a week. Buy it there, and download it immediately. Instant gratification. Does it get any better than that? I mean, it's kinda like "plug and play."

When I downloaded the book, the Store loaded my Acrobat Reader plugin to do it. Up front, AR complained that the book used features that were incompatible with my version (6.0). However, I can't replace 6.0 with the latest version (7.0) for several reasons, so I continued the download. The resulting book looks OK, but maybe I am missing something (?). I tried to go back to the Store to see if there was a way of downloading the book without going through the browser, but it wasn't worth another $9.95 to try it. So, my tale of woe aside,

a) What am I missing, if anything?
b) If anything, can I get another crack at it at no cost? I can use another computer with 7.0 on it.
c) Is the Store site set up to allow direct downloading (e.g., by right-clicking the link and using "Save Target As" instead of using the browser helper? If not, it should be.

Even if I am missing something, the book looks pretty good. I've hired a plumber to do the messy slab work and related DWV planning. He's very interested in seeing how the Kerdi shower works out.

To John Bridge and All,

I just purchased a copy of the Kerdi Shower Book. I have not read it yet, or even had a chance to see if I recieved it. My wife says I need to finish the bathroom remodel before Thanksgiving. I have never seen this system, but , I am excited about doing my shower this way.
I was able to get a few items of Kerdi products from a Dal-Tile supplier, everything ... (I think).. except the pre-made inside and outside corners. Can the Kerdi mat or Kerdi-Band be folded to make a water-tite corner?

I hope I didn't break any rules by printing my e-book and putting it in a 3-ring binder. Presumably you could do the same and have it bound in softcover form...

I'm just finishing up the framing of our new shower, so have been reading the book in hopes of infusing my brain with Kerdi knowledge over the next few days.

This probably deserves a new thread, but what's so special about "deck mud" in the Kerdi shower? The objective would appear to be to create a smooth, properly-sloped surface, which should be doable with a not-as-stiff-as-deck-mud concrete.

(New thread #2) Has Schluter considered making a 2-part drain, so that part 1 could be set in place when building the deck, and part 2 (the flange) could be cemented into part 1 later? I've got long skinny fingers, but I'm not looking forward to the process John describes.

Mikey, there's no material easier to form into a proper sloped shower floor than deck mud. It stays where you put it and screeds off easily. It is nice and dry, so it won't flow and jiggle like concrete.

I never ignore advice from an expert, so deck mud it'll be. I'm just one of those gotta-know-why kind of guys.

Hello all,

The Kerdi Shower Book will never be a paperback. I suppose I should never say never, but it would not be profitable to print and distribute the book. It's too specialized, and it's too short to be a paper book. It's only 84 pages. Also, there would be no way to print the illustrations, especially the big ones that are on the web site.

Dave has already explained why deck mud is the way to go. It's been happening that way for hundreds of years, and no one has developed a better mix.

The two part drain wouldn't work well. You'd have to figure a way for the flange to be embedded in the mud so that the top surface would be flush with the floor. I don't see a way to do that. Hot tip: You could wear rubber gloves when you poke the mud under the Kerdi-drain. They sell good ones made by QEP at Home Depot for three bucks.

Finally, there is no restriction on printing the book for your own use.

I was just doing some recerch on a new Tile saw, and some how came across this site. I am from the old school. My Dad was a contractor In the Town that I grew up In, Escondido Calif. Anyway, to make a long story short!!, I am so glad I stumbled on to your site Mr, John Bridges, It's Great, and I Thank You!!!. I Left the West Coast some ten years ago to take up an offer In the East Coast for a steady job. Illegalls In San Diego County Calif, Shot me down In about five short year's!!!. Anyway, I now work with Helow's, of the Navy Type, and do Tile on the side. YES!!!, It's a lost art, and pushing 59 years old here shortly, I plan to keep It not lost for me, and People like yourself!!!. There are still people out there (Laymen) that can Recanize what I mean!!. Great Site!!!, I fell like I found a long needed drink of water that I have Missed for some time now In your site. I did my whole shower with kerdi and have a lot left over. If I am inclined to do so can I put an extra layer of Kerdi over the piece that is already on the floor? Would this be harmful or would it add to the overall waterproofing?

I haven't done one yet but I'm now a KERDI man SCHLUTER sold whatever name you want to give it. to make and entire enclosure waterproof and the drain setup is incredible. No more stinky bathroom floor from to many people using the shower and it never drying out , it will finally dry out. For my application perfect. No more face mask to cut hardybacker easier estimates.
More options because I personally feel better because of a waterproof struture behind tiles.
