wall and shower pan not in line

I am putting in a basement bath and tiling the shower. The shower pan is not even with the cement backer board for the tile. The pan is one of the ones that is made to be tiled.

Should I build up the wall to even using some thinset (letting it dry before I lay the tiles with thinset as usual)? Take off the cement board and shim it out?

Also, this is my first time doing a shower. I notice with large tiles I get lippage more...I assume this is even worse on a wall. Thoughts on biggest size to go for?

Hi Chris, how thick is the Hardiboard? If it's only 1/4 inch, you may have to remove it and use 1/2 inch.

Looks to be 13/32...so I guess that's the 1/2 inch stuff.

I'd shim the walls. Ideally, you want the walls to overlap the flange.
