Hi Mary Jane

I have used Prosoco's Gloss 'n Guard to put a nice sheen on slate. It's possible that the Stone Tech Lacquer may work in this application. I can only say my clients have been extremely happly with the finish.

Lithofin also makes a product called SSA (Stone Sealer Acrylic). Another excellent product. Keep in mind these are all topical finishes. Depending on wear & maintenance, will need to be stripped and reapplied.

I think I read somewhere that slate should be sealed before grouting because of how difficult it is to clean afterwards...is this correct?

It depends on the setter and the stone. It also depends on your final finish desired and the compatibility of products. For example, I have presealed slate with SLX 100, then topcoated the slate and grout with the Gloss 'n Guard.
