Smoothing out wall

Hello- installing marble kitchen backsplash and have 1 wall that is very "wavy".
I was going to build it up with spackle. Some areas 1/4" difference.

Any issues?

Spackle is water soluble. Your mortar you’re going to use to set the marble contains a lot of water. Not a good combination

You can use cement-based patch from the box store. It’s sold in the flooring department.
