Moen shower valve

The MOEN valve in my shower is ~ 20 years old, but now it is leaking. The valve is enclosed with tile for the most part so there is limited space to work. However there is enough room to change the valve cartridge. You can see the valve cartridge when you remove the handle and I am told you can remove the cartridge and replace it. If the entire valve has TO BE REMOVED then some of the porcelain tile must be cut off to provide access. I wonder if someone can comment on this. The photo I show has the handle on covering the inside.

I think you've already made a pretty sound assessment, Emil.

If just the cartridge needs to be replaced the job is pretty straight forward. If the body needs to be replaced you'll likely be removing some tile, though it might be possible to remove/replace it by opening the wall behind the valve.

Most of those Moen cartridges are still replaced free of charge by Moen, Emil. Some, I expect the ones sold at Homers and such, are not covered, but usually available. The hassle, of course, is in the transaction of the free replacement.

Never seen one that wasn't fairly easy to replace so long as you know how.

Otherwise, what Dan said.

My opinion; worth price charged.

Pretty sure that is the 1225 cartridge. Does it have two mounting screws at like 5 and 7 below the handle.

Moen shower valve

Yes;thank you that Moen number 1225 is consistent with the one i have here. Previously in another shower I have exactly the same problem was evident. The plumber came and tried to extract the cartridge with a tool, but he failed to get just the cartridge alone. An additional piece came out as well. So a new valve was installed.

So in that case the PVC wall was cut to provide access to the valve and it was changed. So a large cover plate was fitted over the front at the handle to cover the opening. It was shaped like an ellipse and available from Home Depot. The elliptical shape was derived from a template provided with the cover plate.

Moen shower valve

thank you: i see the pin: it has the shape of an inverted U. I am keen not to have to cut porcelain to make more space if a new valve is to be installed.. it is very difficult to cut!

Moen shower valve

UPDATE

A plumber came out and changed the cartridge: he used a plumbers wrench and twisted the exiting cartridge to the left and right and then pulled it out. it was dry inside. The new Moen 1225 cartridge had lots of grease on it.
Most probably the cartridge should have been greased years ago. Many thanks to above helpful comments. In fact I found a helpful video on this topic.
