This is how I do a shower pan. I'm sure it breaks some rules, but the inspectors are okay with it. Posting it here to see if you guys approve.

I start by cutting 1" wide strips of 1/2" Hardie and back buttering them, then I put them around the perimeter of the shower and I nail them down.

Then I spread thinset over the entire area, from 1/2" thick on the edges down to regularly troweled thickness in the center.

Then I measure for the drain and transfer the measurements to....

Then I cut the backer and back butter it and squish it into the thinset. I then nail around the edges and around the drain, and tape my joints.

Then I check it out, I have the 1/4" per foot of required slope(actually a little better).

After this I will use a liquid waterproofing membrane, flood test, get it inspected and then put on another layer of hardie, and tile and what-not.

My opinion, I don't like it. Cement boards are designed to be anchored down, not just thinsetted. You're a tileman, tilemen mix cement, or should. 5 bucks worth of cement and 20-30 minutes would have done the same thing but better.

I have seen that done with plywood for a preslope only but never a whole shower.

Yes, I will put another layer or backer over the membrane so the pan will meet up with the top of the 3-piece drain.

Davy, I am not necessarily a tile man. One of sorts, but I work in all areas of construction/remodeling. The backer is mechanically fastened, but only on the edges and near the center.

Ya Luke not a good set up at all. that second layer of hardi is gonna be saturated all of its life and really gonna be a breding ground for mold. IMHO it dont matter what the inspectors think cause Ive never met one who "truely" understood the principles behind a properly built shower.

Couple questions,
*How are you treating the wall to pan connection?
*What is being done at the weeps?
*Why, without any proper knowledge of shower construction are you selling a client a shower built in this manner, Or is this your own home?

No Rick, how do I go about moving it?

I named it the Hackbacker pan for a reason; I am aware that most would consider me to be a hack.

EDIT: Yes, this is my home. I would not be able to, in good conscience, sell someone something I had not done at least a couple times before. I asked the inspector about it before I decided to do it.

I am putting hardi down to the pan and taping the corners, then painting on a membrane.
