posted by Shaughnn Every market is different and the tile industry has really neglected promoting itself for the past couple decades. This is most evident in the mid-West where people think that tile is some fancy luxury which is out of their reach or they recall problem installations from the 70's that left them with bad memories.
I don't really know what your market is like Shaughnn but here in the midwest the tile industry has exploded exponentially in the last 20 years.

20 years ago there were 4 or 5 tile distributors in town and now there are at least 12. There were 3 or 4 fabricators then and we now have 10 major players with about 40 total. That kind of growth is quite good, eh?

Just wondering where you got the impression that midwest people think that tile is "some fancy luxury". I can assure you that I've rarely met one. And as far as bad memories from the 70s - most of the residential tile work was union in the seventies. We had some excellent craftsmen that did very fine work. I know first hand because I learned from them.

If the union wants to break back into residential here they will have an uphill battle. They had better hone their skills too. The old timers are mostly gone and the good union craftsmanship went with them (mostly).
