How much does toilet overlap flange?

When tiling under the toilet, how close to the flange do I need to cut my tile so I can be pretty assured the toilet will cover it?

When I cut the tile, I use a toilet flange (not the one the floor I have an extra one) as a guide it’s just right and all I have to do is lay the tile down trace the ring and WHAMO perfect fit.

I'd say keep it to within 1/4" and you'll be OK. Safest way would be to temp. set the toilet over the flange and trace the base onto the floor.

All of those methods will work, but the right way to do it is to install the flange on TOP of the finished floor, not tile up to it. If you do this, notch the tile so you don't have to drill through them to mount the flange to the subfloor.
