Can I use RedGard on Plaster Walls

Hi,
I have a 1920s bathroom with lath and plaster walls, the previous owner used thinset/ plastic tile and then eventually a plastic surround around the tub. I've ripped those out and want to put up ceramic tile. I don't want to rip the wall out and replace it with cement board, so I was thinking I could just Red Guard the walls and tile over that. Is this idiotic? Thank you!

Welcome, Lala.

Is there a shower in that tub enclosure?

Red face

Thanks so much!!! There's a shower, too,but it's never been properly updated so there's just a hand shower from a faucet that has a side connector for it; I just bought a newer version. It hooks into a piece that holds the hand shower and it works just like a modern showerhead. I don't mind the simplicity of the set-up! I repaired the walls and they're pretty smooth with joint compound now.

There's a ton of joint compound on the walls, will redguard keep it from turning it to mud?
I think I'm gonna have to put up hardie backer, aren't I?

Cement Board to Tub Gap, should I tape & fill?

Hi! I put cement board over the plaster surrounding my tub and am going to tile over it- my question is for the gap between the tub and cement board, should I treat it like the other cement board seams (taping and sealing with tile mortar) or should I wait till the tiling project is complete and just seal it with silicone?
Finding many different answers around the internet and thought I'd ask here, thanks so much

Lala, it'll help if you'll keep all your project questions on one thread so folks can see what you're working on and what's been previously asked and answered. A moderator can give it a more generic title any time you'd like to suggest one.

First, how do you intend to waterproof the shower walls?

I'd like to see a bit more of a gap between the wallboard and tub, but a direct bonded waterproofing membrane (your RedGard) over that wallboard should be fine.

My opinion; worth price charged.
