Thanks, Greg. that helps a lot. I think I'll do that. Still just wondering, though, do they make a particular grout just for onyx and marble? The "onyx" thing seems to be the whole problem.

Nobody makes an onyx specific grout that I'm aware of. You will want to use the unsanded grout. My limited experience with onyx is that it is a very soft stone that breaks and scratches easily. Onyx is a material that requires a delicate touch while working with it. Though usually the smaller sizes seem to be a little easier to work with.mi used some 8x20 and they would fall apart as you picked them up out of the box.

Usually on smaller size stones, I do not seal prior to grouting. I worry that the sealer will get into the grout joints and prevent the grout from staying in location correctly. I will grout small areas and seal the stone and gout 72 hours after grouting.
