Question Mud Base vs Solid Surface Base?

Hi,

I'm in the process of planning a bathroom renovation. I've gutted our small bathroom down to the studs. It has a cracked and leaking 1950's precast concrete shower base over plank subfloor.... (you can see the crack above and below the drain in this pic)

I think a tile floor over a mud base would look best, but I'm wondering how well they really can be expected to hold up over time. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Are they the type of thing that can last forever if done right or can I expect to be redoing it 10 years from now?

Fiberglass is out of the question, but I'm also considering one of these solid material bases if it will avoid future problems...

Opinions?

Thanks
Charlie

I guess the real question is do you want a tile floor or solid surface???
A mud pan done correctly will last mucho longo.

Hi Charlie, welcome! If a mud shower base is done correctly it shouldn't crack, that is unless you are on swamp land.
