Schluter tray in before the wallboard?

I am using the Schluter shower system for a remodel of a small full bath. All of the installation material shows the tray going in after the wallboard. But our plumber would like it in before so he can make sure that the drain is in the right place etc. To complicate matters, we're going to have to trim it slightly because our bath is tiny.

Am I best off trimming and dry laying it in there with 1/2" shim for the wallboard and having him mark off that? Or can the wallboard be installed after the tray and just brought down over the edges of it, as with a cast tray/insert? If the latter, do I need to worry about the tray getting dinged up during the rest of the work?

It is fine to put the tray in first.

Tray is pretty tough, so it should hold up well.

Welcome to the forum.

You can do it either way, but I think it's easier to put the drywall in first. You will have to take care not to ding it up.

I'm not sure I understand your plumber's reasoning.
