Tumbled Marble Backsplash Question

Hey Guys,
I just finished my Granite Tile counter top and it looks great. So now its on to the backsplash. What I have right now is a thin sheet of Laminate for a backspalsh. It seems to be stuck pretty good to the wall. Can I tile right over this with my 4" tumbled marble?

Thanks,
Torrey

More info to the above post..... The laminate is stuck directly to the sheetrock.
What happens if I try to remove it and tear the sheetrock?
Also, the tile store is suggesting me use mastick for laying this marble is this ok? Will these 4" marble tiles slip as I lay them? If so what is the best way to avoid this? Thanks for any advice

Thanks guys.

Hi Torrey,

I usually pull the laminate off. Yes, it tears up the sheetrock, but it doesn't matter. You can still tile right over it. Just remove all the loose paper from the surface. I would use thin set and not mastic. There is a chance the stone might absorb the oil in the mastic. Use plastic shims (Home Depot) or bits of cardboard to support the tiles as you set them. The thin set will stiffen in a couple hours over the sheetrock.

Can someone tell me what the procedures are for cleaning, sealing, protecting, etc; for my tumbled marble backsplash? Do I lay the tiles then clean with water, seal / enhance, then grout, then clean again, then seal???? I'm kind of at a lost for the proper procedure for all this. HELP!

Thanks,
Torrey
