Patching slab around drain

Looking to patch a trench in this 3” thick slab.

My plan is to shovel in some damp sand until it’s level with the bottom of the slab, tamp it down, paint some loose thinset onto the sides of existing slab and immediately fill hole with concrete for a flush patch. Let dry, then do a bonded mud bed.

Is that approach correct?

Do I need to add rebar or any other kind of reinforcing to tie old and new together?

A three-inch field in a SOG foundation? Youins Yankees do some weird stuff, Lou.

Doesn't look like there was any reinforcing steel in that slab before you cut into it, so there wouldn't be anything to match. I like re-bar in my slab repairs, or at least some re-bar dowels into the sides of the hole, but in your situation, that might be overkill. Your sides look rough enough that just bonding your patching concrete mix with a bit of thinset mortar might be good enough.

My opinion; worth price charged.
