Mind the Gap

Hi folks, long time listener, first time caller.

First DIY tile project here converting old tub enclosure to shower. Did a lot of homework including referring to these forums on more than one occasion. Despite all that, somehow I’ve miscalculated my total height and have ended up with a 3/4” gap between top tile course and finished ceiling.

Options I can see at this point:

1. Caulk it white, blend with ceiling
2. Add another grout line (3/16”) and tile sliver course. Then white caulk to ceiling.
3. Possibly same as #2 but with little to no vertical grout lines.

Maybe I’m over thinking it or missing another obvious simple solution so appreciate your bright ideas and shared experience here.

Hmmm… I like the out of box thinking but think this would cause even more aggravation. Ceilings are already quite low at 7’ and the shower ceiling is continuous to rest of room (which is finished) so would mess with lighting, duct work, fan, etc.

you could put some kind 1/2" or 5/8" trim in there to fill the gap, and grout in between. -I did that with my shower at the top because of a similar situation as you. Since I already had schulter metal trim in my shower I just used teh same color/material.

Either a sliver of tile, or trim. Pencil trim, ogee trim or chair rails. Or you can rip down some quartz or granite to match your benchtop and have an accent/feature in place of the slivers.

I think a couple of good old coats of drywall mud would do the trick. You can leave space for a grout line or not, dealer's choice. I would float it out about a foot or soto a nice feathed edge like you would with any mud work. 3/4 might be to much to in the small space of your shower to float oit far enough but I think it is worth trying

Thanks folks. To close the loop on this here’s where I ended up.

Just did a simple white caulk fill and figured if it really bothers me, I can always come back later. I already hardly notice it.

It’s not a pro job I know but overall quite pleased with how it’s turned out if I do say so myself.
