is it possible to clean stained granite?

I have a problem with my granite countertops. We have a cooktop that is set into the granite and the cutout for the cooktop was done by the installers at the house. The installers spoke almost no English--I think they were Polish. The head installer spoke a little English, and when he left he said something about how we would have to seal the granite. I assumed he meant that in time we would have to reseal it, which I had already heard about. He didn't make clear that the edge around the cooktop that was freshly cut would have to be sealed. Well, that edge has now had grease or moisture soak into it, probably because liquids seaped under the cooktop, and there is a darkish stain around the area but the stain is within the granite. The granite colors are dark yellow/orange/brown/red and at first I thought it was my imagination that some of it looked darker, but now it's noticeable and it is clearly a stain. Is there anything I can do to clean it before sealing it off so it doesn't get even worse? I've purchased sealant for stone, but I'm hoping there might be something I can do first to clean it.

Thanks! --Laurie

It is possible, but much depends on how stained the stone is and what caused the stains. I am not even a novice in this area, but there are stone care websites that these types of questions are routinely asked and answered. I do know that a poultice is often recommended.

It is probably beyond the point you could clean it.Granite can be seriously stained by oily substances. If a degreasing cleaner, even Joy works, doesn't work, then a poultice doesn't work, call a resto type guy maybe he can use a flame to get the rest out.Don't use bleach.

Thanks for your responses. I'm thinking it's probably not going to be possible to clean this, but I'll try. So, say I do the best I can do but it doesn't get much better, should I go ahead and seal it as is to prevent it from getting worse?

Laurie,

You can pull almost anything out of natural stone if you have the time and knowledge. A seasoned restoration pro will have an awesome bag of tricks..but I'd try this first.. I 've drawn some pretty deep stains out with this:

Very user friendly ..Just read the directions

Hay Trask, hows it going it's been awhile. The stain can be removed with Bellinzoni Mangia Macchia it might take a few applications depending how bad it is. I have had good luck using this product so like pulling blooms.

We sell the Bellinzoni too and it is a great product. I wouldn't hesitate to try a poultice as it requires little work and you can buy it cheap: http://www.aquamixdirect.com/servlet...tain%2C/Detail

Let us know what works for you and good luck on removing that stain!
