I use a percolator myself. I find it superior to drip coffee.
I have recently become a fan of the Keurig coffee system though. We got one for my mother-in-law, and it's perfect for her. The machines are a bit pricey, but a cup of Kuerig coffee is cheap when compared to a cup of Starbucks - which is what their marketing team was shooting for.

Yeah i'm with dan. those keurig coffee machines are amazing. no need to put on a whole pot. just throw one of those cups in the machine and you have a nice hot cup of coffee in about 20 seconds.

How "in to" coffee are you? My brother is so in to it that he roasts his own beans from green. He swears by the vacuum coffee brewing method. This is strictly a manual operation. No timers or clocks or any of that stuff. Here's a link to a store that sells them. You can also get them on eBay. If you want to plug in a maker and have it grind your beans and set a timer so it's ready when you get up then this method is not for you.

Brian, I've never tried it, but I'm intrigued by the idea of roasting my own coffee beans. For one thing, green coffee beans have a longer shelf life than roasted beans. Whoever designs a coffee roaster that is widely adopted by residential users will become filthy rich.
What say you about your brother's coffee?

My sister (lives in Chula Vista - this must be a southern Cal. thing) roasts her own beans too (in an old popcorn popper that she adapted), and I believe she's using a vacuum system too.
Sad thing is, she's so picky now that she can't enjoy a cup of coffee anywhere unless she takes all her stuff with her.
And the beans smell surprisingly unpleasant while they're roasting.
As far as coffeemakers, we have a small Bunn in our kitchen that works pretty well, but haven't tried enough other types and brands to say it's the best.

Steve, my brother lives in Colorado but I smiled when I read the description of your sister's coffee habit. Sounds exactly like my brother. He takes his coffee stuff with him everywhere. He rarely flies anywhere. He takes his car and he has all his coffee "stuff" in a plastic milk crate.
Dan, the coffee my brother made was delicious. The thing about the green beans is that they are cheaper and you can get so many varieties. He did the same as Steve's sister and uses an old popcorn popper (unless he's updated) to roast. Maybe there's a coffee roasters DIY forum out there.

Roasting Beans
We use our toaster oven to roast the beans, not exactly high tech... but it works.

I love my Bunn coffee maker, too. They last forever and make good coffee, but the main attraction is the instant gratification aspect. You get a pot in about 3 minutes.
I don't roast my beans, but I do grind them. I'm no coffee snob, though - I'll drink any coffee, anytime, anywhere.

I do espresso. No "Cafe Americano" in my house. A nice Bialetti espresso maker and some espresso coffee and you're set. Takes about 7 minutes on a gas stove. Have it straight or with milk. Mmmmm good.

I don't drink the stuff, but my wife is pretty critical and has tried several machines over the years. Believe it or not, she swears by a $20 5-cupper from Walgreens. She stumbled across it while we were on vacation a few years ago. The motel room unit was awful (to her). So she was shopping at the Walgreens, sees this unit on display and buys it. Pure impulse with zero research. First thing she does when we get home is go to Walgreens and buy another one. I think we're one our 3rd unit.
Consumer reports did a thing on coffeemakers not too long ago and pointed that the most critical element to good coffeemaking is the brew temp. Most makers are too cool.

EDIT: This early 'Tywrig' brewing machine (pictured) got's that "Keurig" brewer beat six ways from Sunday.
