Censorship

Fascinating topic, I think. There is good to it, bad to it. The most fascinating part of it, I think, is that one most often doesn't even know something is being censored.

John, just saying there are pros and cons to censorship. Censorship can protect one. Protect from many things. I want to be protected. Don't you? Then there is the following, other side of the coin:

"[O]ne man's vulgarity is another's lyric."
-- John Marshall Harlan, Supreme Court justice, 1971

From a recent experience, learned I must control my "vulgarity". Yep, me "vulgar".

"Dat veniam corvis, vexat censura columbas. - Censure acquits the raven, but pursues the dove."
-- Decimus Junius Juvenalis (Juvenal), Satires, II. 63. Roman rhetorician and satirical poet (1st to 2nd cent. A.D.)

Especially by use of magic wands by the raven. Raven protects the masses from the evil dove.

"A censor is an expert in cutting remarks. A censor is a man who knows more than he thinks you ought to."
-- Dr. Laurence Peter, Peter's Quotations: Ideas for Our Time. New York: Morrow, 1977, p. 97

Magic wand once again at its best. Cut, delete, never existed therefore never known by most. Like I said, fascinating.

"What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist."
-- Salman Rushdie

The dove offends? Or does the raven? Which offends the greatest? Where does one draw the line? Slippery road?

"Did you ever hear anyone say 'That work had better be banned because I might read it and it might be very damaging to me'?"
-- Joseph Henry Jackson

End of the world kind of damage or inconsequential kind of damage? Does it really matter? Slippery road kind of thing, again?

"Everyone is in favor of free speech. Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people's idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone else says anything back, that is an outrage."
-- Winston Churchill

The raven decides what is "vulgar", I guess.

One of my favorite ones having to do with boobs.
"Censorship of anything, at any time, in any place, on whatever pretense, has always been and always be the last resort of the boob and the bigot."
-- Eugene Gladstone O'Neill, American playwright (1888-1953)

Who's the boob?

"Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? - Who will watch the watchers?"
-- Juvenal

Very true, who does watch the watchers? Do you know, John?

Editing: Forget it all, John. Doesn't really matter, letting the slippery road slip to wherever it pleases. The raven trumps the dove sort of thing.

I don't like censorship any better than the next guy, but for the life of me I don't know what brought this on. You're not confusing censorship with moderating, are you?

Thank you for responding, John.

No, no confusion. Not so at the opposite ends of the spectrum as one makes it sound. Very hot topic from the little googling I've done.

Like I said, forget it. Thanks, again.

The whole issue is frustrating. I'm no expert at the topic, but in my opinion, I don't think it's necessary. We need to put our focus on different things than censorship.
