Kerdi as a waterproofing membrane for floors?

In some jobs lately, we are convincing clients to waterproof their plywood subfloors and underlayments. Now that could be done with 1/4 inch cement board followed by trowel on membranes, or it could be done with Ditra. Could it also be done with Kerdi? In other words, would we get the same effect as, say, Hardibacker, along with the waterproofing effect of the Kerdi? After all, if CBU does not add any real structural integrity but does help with bonding, couldn't Kerdi accomplish the same result? While saving 1/8" over Ditra and 1/4" plus over backerboard in height? I know it wouldn't have the 'deflection assistance' of Ditra, but if that's not the issue, if there's adequate deflection support, why not use just the Kerdi?

The only advantage I can think of is that CBU is nailed/screwed down to floor, but if tile bonds well to kerdi walls, I can't see why it would not bond well to floors even better, cuz then gravity is on your side.

Go ahead and tell me it's a dumb idea but remember to tell me why, too!

It's not a dumb idea, but I don't think Schulter would back you on that. Kerdi is fine for shower floors, and even gang showers, but I don't think it's as effective as Ditra as an underlay for floor tile.

Maybe not as effective, but if all I'm looking for is waterproofing and bonding, without the deflection help, is it maybe as useful as waterproof CBU? Like Wedi board, maybe?

Kerdi is not meant to be adhered to plywood... It works on the floors of showers because you're going over mud... Schluter says use ditra and Kerdiband the seams and floor-wall transitions if you want waterproof...

Or, if you're that height-sensitive, use one of the Noble membranes . If installed with their magic pookey, you get way serious crack isolation, too.

Didn't think of the 'sticking to plywood' issue...hmmmm

I guess I could use the Nobler stuff..

Thanx!

Clay, If you go with the Noble CIS option and use the Noble EXT, wear disp. gloves and consider using a throwaway trowel to spread the pooky. It's great stuff and whatever you put down is going to be stuck there forever.
