Thank you, I'm remembering now. I have seen that before but what I was looking for previously was if there was a specification for the waterproofing height above the shower floor.

It is interesting that the 2-inch height is mentioned but nothing of the waterproofing layer.

For example: what if a curb were comprised of the following (assumes traditional mud pan with liner):

3cm solid surface top (approx. 1.25 inches for us USA folk)
0.5 inches of mud/lath

that would leave only .25 inches of waterproofing height above the shower floor. Then if the mud layer is thicker...

From what I've heard is that one of the plumbing specifications says that the waterproofing layer should be 1 inch above the finished shower floor. But I haven't confirmed that.

Heck, I have enough trouble just trying to understand my tile books let alone plumber's mumbo jumbo.

Lots of interesting information here for sure!

Now I am curious how a curbless could pass code without being a visible step down into the shower area to mee the 2" requirement?

I think you'll find the same is true for the code requirement that the waterproof liner rise a minimum of six inches up the walls or 3 (or 2) inches above the finished curb top, Jim. Has never made any sense to me, but nor does the lack of any requirement for shower entry height above the drain at all if there is no curb.

But I recall when the TCNA Methods and Materials committee had a member contact representatives of the plumbing code committee and he verified that that's indeed what the plumbing code requires; no curb, no height requirement at all. Don't know if there's ever been any follow-up on that, but at the time the plumbing people didn't see any need to change that requirement. You might wanna check with somebody on the various technical committees to see if that's ever been pursued further.

And that should answer your query, too, Dean. As silly as it may sound, there is no requirement for curb-height-above-drain if there is no curb.

My opinion; worth price charged.
