Going back to my pic in post 23, this system is completely waterproof and you can see the 4 weep holes in the top. Pebbles (2 or 3 handfuls) can be placed on top of the drain to keep the weep holes clear. Then I paint the membrane down in the bowl with thinset and then fill with dry pack to the height of the rest of the shower floor, keeping the same pitch. The grate can be adjusted for the correct tile thickness.
