You wouldn't use a tile backer for that application, so no problem there.

I would use Laticrete's MVIS to adhere the tile to the brick. Skim it first to fill in all the mortar joints and the other tiny voids on the face of the brick. Then use the appropriate size botched trowel for setting the stone.

Are there any cracks in the brick or mortar joints? That happens sometimes from settling. You don't want to set tile over that.
