Tile and Wood Inlay

I have seen a few pics of wood laid in a basket weave pattern in a tile floor. Basically 12 x 12 or 18 x 18 tiles in a diamond pattern separated by wood boards (like very wide grout).

Is this an ok idea or is it asking for trouble with expansion issues or other problems.

How is something like that done? If you have backer board set on the enter floor, the thickness of tile and mortar is ... what 3/8 inch thick? Therefore the wood would have to be planed down to this thickness. Would you glue the boards to the cement backer board, nail it, what nails to use to drive through the cement? Other issues to think about? Oh, What grout to use between wood and tile? Sanded? Flexible grout?

Could be a fun project or a nightmare
