cutting small slate tiles

I'm planning to set a slate tile backsplash. The pattern has some fairly small pieces - some 2 inches. I'm concerned about using a large wet saw on these small pieces. I want to make sure they don't crack and I want to keep my fingers. I've heard that you can use a hacksaw with a Carborundum blade. That seems like it would take a lot of muscle. Is the wet saw a better choice and do you have recommendations for cutting the small pieces?
