Yeah, bumps need to be ground down. Valleys are a bit easier. On a job today where the wall had a valley of about 1/4 inch. Mixed up some Laticrete 317 and floated it....put a fan on it and re-did it later. I didn't "fix" it, but I helped it. Screeds and wall mud are the best choice....but this was what I had to work with, but you can't do more than 1/4" at a time.....
