Hmm, looks like the oil painting effect

Actually I was thinking of a whole different perspective mostly since you've seen that photo over and over you need a new view. Like this... (hope you don't mind). The border draws you away from the outer distractions into the main subject. The main subject is not really so much your son as much as it what he's doing. I removed the shadow from the flower pot too and added a little light to direct your eye to his hands. Also cropped it so that the area I'm drawing attention to is on the "tic-tac-toe" grid.

I'm not a pro. Those are simple things I learned about in a book that helps the overall look of the picture.

Maybe you like, maybe you don't. Art is undefined.
