It goes all the way to the corner of the room. looks like removing the lightweight concrete while doing a tub removal would be appropriate. so Ill just go with the vinyl tile which is pretty durable...

Found a link that may help you your board would have a rabbet cut out of it. 4" might work but it has to be thick enough if you're going over the tile. Usually these are made out of 5/4 or 6/4 stock....

4" maybe too wide but I do know the thickness over the tile should be 1/4" so you would have a notch cut or and the thicker part goes down to the wood. in that case you could butt the carpet nicely...

I would do a pvc liner as opposed to regard. the reason being you can have adhesion problems unless you know what youre doing. you either dampen the mud before rolling it on or use a primer coat....
