Depending on what your goals and budget are, Alterna would be a cheaper and much easier material to use in place of tile. And you would have a much easier time getting a nearly flush...

Wow, I've never even heard of such an adhesive. Have to admit, I don't trust adhering tile with anything out of a spray bottle haha.
