if the tiles snap good with the snapper then id say go for it. you can always buy/rent a wet saw if u have problems.

heres what I do cause the bumps you are seeing is common even when seaming as you tile. trowel the thinset out for the tiles then skim some thinset off the top of the k band so the thinset sits lower...

I would have him dig as much silicone as possible out of the seams and use tape and thinset. I would as redguard the whole shower down to the pan. unless he hung plastic before hanging the hardie....
