Harbor Freight sells some demo "rotary hammers" that are pretty cheap. They do the job and aren't as good as some name brands....but probably cheaper than renting one.......

Remember that you'll want a thin plastic membrane covering the floor if you do a mud pan. You need to cover he plastic with some galvanized expanded lathe as well. You can just staple it down.
