Normally, I screw anything over 3/8" instead of stapling, then patch and skimcoat the ply before any vinyl. I don't trust staples to draw the ply down secure enough.

Plus you have to remember, you will be using the bond of the lino ultimately to hold down your tiles. Not a great idea, because the glue for the lino WILL eventually give up, trust me.
