George, you can use a paint on membrane as a pan liner and install your mud bed over it using the drain you have. I agree that since you have a curved curb, the paint on membrane would be easier....

In that case, I would nail a 3/4 inch thick strip of wood (3x4 x 3x4 will do) up each side on top of the sheetrock. That will give you a guide to ride you straight edge on when you pull your mud....
