Aguamix Renue got rid of the marks, but did make the tiles end up looking a touch lighter than they were. i don't know how...

so after speaking with the company that makes...

so after speaking with the company that makes this sealer, here's what they told me:

1) sealer is water-based

2) the sealer isn't causing the rings

3) all granite should be sealed

i've got a bartop with black granite tiles from home depot - MSI Granite, 'Absolute Black'.

it's about a year old and i believe i sealed it once with a standard spray-and-wipe...

No, it is definitely still smooth - I can't feel it at all and it disappears from view unless you view it with light from the window or the track lighting. It is still shiny, just a different color...

Which is the lesser of two evils - 3'4" plywood and 1/4" CBU, or 3/4" plywood and 3/8" plywood (tiling on plywood). I would imagine the first would be the better...
