Forgot to ad I like to use the Pro Line Quick drain. The grate is only 1 1/2" wide and using a grate longer than the drain body is possible. I don't know if a longer grate vs drain body is possible...

It locks together and install with caulking and a couple of screws per piece. All the seam and screw holes still need to be filled and sanded with the manufacturer...

As with what most have said setting both sides with thinset is the cause. It shrinks a little as it drys and creates stress. Most of the time the cap will crack on the top where the radius starts....
