Mike, cement grout properly mixed and cleaned, strike the joint rather than shape it with a sponge. That makes it dense in both aspects.

Crackle glazes crack as the setting material dries out. Sealing before hand wouldn't seal the cracks that have yet to occur.

I have always set with lugs. Sanded over 1/8". There are specialty grouts that have a wider range. Not seeing the tile I have no idea why you would use spacers on a lug tile.

Have seen it numerous times in soft bisque rectangle tile. Long ends shrink and pull against the middle. My numerous may be more than most because people only call me for problems.
