Normally we start tiling, then when we know where our grout joints will fall, we cut in the niche, and build our own to match the grout joints for the particular tiles.

For those reading along, CBU under Kerdi also...

For those reading along, CBU under Kerdi also works well in area that flood. Simply remove the drywall from the other side of the wall and let the space dry out. No need to retile the bathroom.

Its my preference to waterproof and tile at least a few inches outside the wet area. In dry areas you can tile anything you'd like. Its more of a design choice.
