Seems to me if it's real porcelain it's not going to work anyway. It won't absorb enough. And topical sealers won't last long.

I agree on bonded mud. Pea-gravel concrete is also an option. You'll have a joint where it meets the 40 in. section either way. I'm a mud man so I would choose deck mud. :)

My version uses the Kerdi Drain as is. The stop is in the overflow pipe with a little up/down lever. The version you posted probably doesn't employ an overflow. :)
