if this helps... for dead loads..10psf is standard with carpet and 15psf is standard for tile so i would assume at least around 20psf for mud.. im sure somebody better versed might know more...

two blocks from our local HD is a brickyard, so good sand is easy to get. they have a nice course sharp concrete block sand...

The best thing to do IMHO use unmodified thinset with roofing nails to reduce stress
