JIng, thinset is just that THINSET. It is not...
JIng, thinset is just that THINSET. It is not designed to be used in that thickness. It basically is a glue for the tile not for leveling or in this case building up the slope of the floor.

Something I think I see is the amount of thinset under the tiles in the bottom left photo in the 1st post. It appears to be 1/2 - 3/4" thick. Is this true?
The walls are WEDI.

Yes you can tile over vinyl..............but...........the installation is only as good as the vinyl is stuck to the floor. There is very good pooky out there ( aka quality thinset ) that will do...

I like screws with plaster washers or KERDI...
I like screws with plaster washers or KERDI washers to secure drywall or anything else to the ceiling when installing tile there.
