The stubs get cut off to length afterward, so you have a lot of play for thickness

Itís not this particular unit, itís a nicer one but you get the idea.

Seemed like cost was a factor more than time here though unless I misread.

Personally Iíd use foam board and be ready for a flood test by noon, but not everyone wants to pay...

Itís easier to use sheet membrane on drywall than cement board. If you do use cement board and sheet membrane dampen it first so it doesnít dry out your mortar.

Quick and easy IMO would be sheet...

I screed my thinset to the depth I want with a jig. Then I leave it until it's hard, not try and set the tile fresh.

That way it's damn near impossible to set...
