Yep, too much water during mixing or application could cause cracking. But those joints look pretty full and that can be difficult with loose grout. I’d bet on movement before too much water.

I think he means 3” beyond where the original 5” k-band was folded and lapped beyond the seam. So he’ll have 5” of band beyond the seam, and the first 2.5” of that will be built up over the remnants...
