I've seen water travel (wick) through drywall 7 feet horizontally outside of a shower. I have no doubt that it could travel up to the top of the shower wall.

I've done it. I built a tub surround out of Kerdi board so there was no wood to attach the ledger to. Put masking tape on the Kerdi board and hot glued the ledger to the masking tape. Worked fine.
